-Theories & Thought Bubbles-
Marvel, Bringin’ Sexy Back
In the wake of Avengers vs. X-Men, Marvel has released a entire relaunch, abandoning some titles and renumbering others. Top of that list is Avengers. Rick Remender and John Cassady are the team responsible for the new Uncanny Avengers, a team that contains both classic Avengers as well as parts of the X-Men. At the outset the team is comprised by: Captain America, Thor, Wolverine, Scarlet Witch, Rogue, and Havok. At the end of Avengers vs. X-Men, Cap said that the team needed something more, that it should be “Something a little Uncanny.”
This relaunch of one of Marvel’s biggest titles has been placed in the capable hands of Rick Remender, the mind responsible for Uncanny X-Force. Remender is known for his ability to couple action with compelling character representation. Anyone who can make Deadpool a somewhat heartwarming character, has the ability to change the staleness that they Avengers have become. Aside from great characters, Remender’s plot has become something necessary for the franchise revival. A new team needs to be formed, a new team with a new mission and trusting in Remender to bring us this team is a step in the right direction for Marvel.
Aside from the writing, the art within the story goes beyond the usual cartooning of Marvel comics. Uncanny Avengers is a story that uses realism to tell a new kind of story. Drawing on the popularity of the movies, John Cassady gives the reader a chance to recognize certain character designs from the movies. But as the story progresses the reader sees throwbacks to House of M and Civil War, especially in the character designs for Scarlet Witch and Captain America. The art of Uncanny Avengers is a great way for Marvel to draw new readers into one of their most popular story arcs.
Joe Quesada, chief creative officer for Marvel, has said that, “Marvel is working on the most incredible initiative, it’s called Marvel NOW! We are relaunching all our top super hero books. But it’s not a reboot, if you’re a fan of the movies or a lapsed comic book fan, it is a perfect opportunity for you to come in and start on a new Marvel Universe. It’s new creators, new looks, and a new status quo…” Clearly Marvel is putting a lot of faith in where this new creation is going to go, frankly they’ve got a lot to make up for their sordid and stale past. Time will tell if books like Uncanny Avengers can perform in the way that DC’s New 52 has for the past year.
