|Ed’s Early Evaluations|
Welcome back friends! I hope you all had a wonderful week. Me? I had a blast on my trip, so many of my favorite bands, and nothing beats reconnecting with old friends and making new concert friends as well! But, that’s not important, what is important is this weeks books are great! Oh yeah, one more thing, make sure to swing by this Saturday Oct 19th for our annual “Treasure Your Chest” Breast Cancer fundraiser! See you around the shop–Ed
“Cult Classic: Creature Feature” Vault: Were you a fan of “The Creepshow”, “Slither” or “Heavy Metal”, because if so this book is for you! The art is creepy, the characters are equal parts lovable and repugnant respectively, and the horror tropes are in full swing. Worth checking out to get into the spirit of Halloween. 7 skeletons out of 10.
“The Marked” Image: So I think this is basically “Men In Black” meets “Harry Potter”, it’s a rad concept. There are tattooed wizards, secret government organizations, banned techno-organic magic, and a much deeper world only hinted at. I especially liked the magical WW2 history was in addition to the actual events, complimenting history rather than taking away from the horrors and heroism experienced during the war. 7 magical makeovers out of 10
“The Mask: I Pledge Allegiance To The Mask” Darkhorse: It’s brutal, it’s bloody and it might even make a point. I’ve only seen the Jim Carey movie, never read The Mask so I don’t know how it compares but I sure wouldn’t let the kiddos read this book. The Mask is poetically grotesque, and the few murders he commits are on truly heinous individuals. Get ready for violence and foul sexually explicit language and situations. 8 gallons of syrup out of 10
“Robotech: Remix” Titan: If you dig giant robot battles and time/dimension hopping shenanigans, you should check this book out. You’ll get the most out of this if you’ve read the preceding series or are a fan of the 80s anime. It deftly captures character design while updating the line work for the modern comic medium. Overall a good start to a new space epic.
Tales From The Dark Multiverse: Batman Knightfall” DC: If you’ve been enjoying the “The Batman Who Laughs”, the various “Dark Knights” (evil alternate reality Batmen) or miss the “Elseworlds” then I think you’ll enjoy this book. Remember when Bane broke the Bat’s back in the 90s? Well what if Bruce never recovered and Azrael kept the mantle until now? Yeah, it’s bonkers all right. I’m pretty sure if you never read the “Knightfall” saga you’ll still be able to enjoy the excellent storytelling and art on display here. 8 horrifying depictions of cybernetic life support out of 10.
“X-Men” Marvel: This is such a nice, heartwarming Summer’s family gathering throughout most of the issue that I can’t help but think it’s the calm before the storm. There are little seeds of foreshadowing, and some early action rescuing captive mutants. What interests me the most though is the [Redacted] girl. Her appearance and disappearance really have me intrigued. Art is at its best with shadows and huge sci fi megastructures. It’s a slow start but I’m gonna pick up issue two and see where this happy family goes. 7 gorilla scientists out of 10
