|Ed’s Early Evaluations|
Hello again, only a few first issues this week and they’re all fun reads! Since there were so few firsts I went ahead and reviewed two Marvel books, I hope I’m forgiven. In other news, you all raised over $4600 at “Treasure Your Chest” last weekend! We can’t thank you enough for making this another successful fundraiser! In other news, I am returning to work at Fantasium, and look forward to seeing you all again real soon. Remember to read responsibly –Ed
“Count Crowley Reluctant Midnight Monster Hunter” Darkhorse: A surprisingly good read, with solid dialog, characterization, design and pacing. Think of “Svengoolie” or similar horror show hosts, except the monsters aren’t just on the screen! It’s a four-issue mini, and tis the season for screaming; check out this horrific monster mag! 8 drinks out of 10
“Marauders” Marvel: This is pretty darn good, and it starts with a small, though important mystery. [Redacted] can’t use the Krakoan Portals and no one knows why, though there are “top men” working on it. Good action, and great characterization, leads to an interesting team dynamic with a mission of utmost importance; rescue captured, scared or otherwise waylaid mutants and get them to Krakoa where they’ll be safe. 7 seagulls out of 10
“The Amazing Mary Jane” Marvel: It’s a cute story about Mary Jane’s big break into acting, but the [Redacted] is actually the villain [Redacted] leading to some interesting conversations. It’s a fun light read with a cute and playful tone. A welcome break from all the serious and important, or dark and gritty books. 7 twenty second dance parties out of 10
“Money Shot” Vault: This is definitely for adults, though not pornographic it deals with related language and situations on an intergalactic level. It’s somehow goofy and self serious. A Cinemax after hours exploration of space and the unique way this team of scientists raise money for their research. I’m actually surprised it isn’t raunchier, there’s never any question of what is happening in panel, between the art and the dialog, but it’s literally part of the plot and never seems excessive.
